A fine days work by the lads today. Some of the football played against St James B was a joy to watch. There were some great passing moves that lead to a couple of cracking goals.

The match against the eventual winners, Raith Rovers A was a very tight affair with nothing between the teams. However, Raith fell foul of the 3 running fouls rule and conceded a penalty. Kev Craib took his one step and converted the spot kick expertly.

In the third game, AWF returned to produce some excellent football and were well deserved winners by 5-1.

In the semi final AWF faced our old foes St James A. Again, we played very well only to be held 1-1 at half time. After half time, AWF were caught cold by 2 goals in the first two minutes of the second half. To be fair, both shots were pretty much unstoppable. AWF battled back well and should have had a penalty when Kev (or it may have been Allan) was hacked down on the edge of the area (and it looked suspiciously inside the area) but the ref only awarded a foul. St James were, as usual, a tad physical. Allan (Hatchet) Harrison pulled a goal back with 3 minutes to go but St James held on for (what I thought was) an undeserved win.

In the 3rd/4th place play-off we played Fife Wanderers. AWF went 2 goals up and basically held the ball and frustrated the Wanderers who could not get past some stout defending by the Arbroath lads.

Overall the lads played brilliantly today and everyone deserves all of the praise. Hatchet’s goal scoring was exceptional, Kev Craib held the ball up extremely well. The defence was marshalled well by Dave Milne in goal with Dave Scott and Wullie Craib largely untroubled in the group matches. When Gary Bruce and John (Windaeman) Connor came on, they didn’t let the side down, providing some telling passes that led to goals.

Pete Bell made a welcome return to the Arbroath squad and came on for the second half of the 3rd/4th  place game and made a good save that kept us in front.

I apologise if I have got some of the scorers wrong, I was too busy encouraging the lads to keep a mental note! If anyone has the right scorers, please free to correct them! Well done again lads, a brilliant effort. I feel that if it wasn’t for St James A, it could have very well been our day.
